etWe campaigned for a national low-cost loan fund for owners struggling to fund empty home refurbishments and for a simple change in the law to make it easier for people and communities to get their hands on empties.
The response to our campaign was staggering:
100,000 petition signatures within a week of launching The Great British Property Scandal campaign
Nearly 120,000 supporters in total
More than 6,500 empty homes reported - many of which have been brought back into use
£17 million allocated for new national low-cost loan funds
George Clarke appointed Independent Empty Homes Advisor to the Government
There are still 350,000 long-term empty homes in the UK, so there is lots more work to be done. But let's keep up the momentum of the past year: with innovation and creative thinking, and by working together with councils, communities and individuals we can get these homes back into use for families who really need them.
Every empty counts. Together we can stop the scandalous waste.
"The Case for Space
The Size of England's New Homes"

Through analysis of EU Housing statistics in 2005, Policy
Exchange and Localis found that new homes in the UK
not only appeared to be shrinking, but were also the
smallest in Western Europe. Consumers in Ireland could
expect new homes to be 15% bigger, in the Netherlands
they were 53% bigger and in Denmark, the average
newly built home was 80% bigger than in the UK.
