Bradford & Bingley announces loss
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7587360.stm
Voilà qui ne va pas arranger le credit crunchBradford & Bingley (B&B), a buy-to-let loans specialist, has reported a loss for the six months to 30 June, with impairment charges up sharply.
B&B reported a loss of £26.7m for the period, against a £180.4m profit last year, and said it remained "cautious".
Credit impairment charges for the six months rose to £74.6m, up from £5.3m in the same period last year.
"We have witnessed unprecedented financial dislocation, with wholesale medium-term funding markets being difficult to access since last summer".
B&B's rights issue had to be restructured twice after initially failing to attract sufficient interest.
B&B's impairment charges for the first half of 2008 soared largely as a result of a rise in the number of mortgages in arrears for three months or more.
The lender said has seen arrears increase and said it "anticipated this trend to continue throughout the second half".
Encore 6 mois à vivre??Looking ahead, B&B said it would focus on higher quality loans and maintain a "prudent approach to funding".
While the bank is still going to focus on the buy-to-let market, it said it would reduce the volume in the second half until "more favourable conditions return".

Le gouvernement anglais en mode panique depuis 2 semaines...
The City regulator is involved in secret talks to engineer a takeover of Bradford & Bingley as it seeks a permanent solution to secure the future of the embattled buy-to-let mortgage lender, The Sunday Telegraph has learned.
In the wake of a tumultuous week in global equity and credit markets which saw HBOS, Britain's biggest home-loan provider, agree an emergency sale to Lloyds TSB, the Financial Services Authority (FSA) is understood to have been in contact with Santander, the Spanish banking group that owns Abbey and has just bought Alliance & Leicester; ING, the Dutch banking group; and National Australia Bank, which owns the Yorkshire and Clydesdale banks, to gauge their interest in a takeover of B&B.
Last week, Moody's, the credit rating agency, downgraded B&B debt to one notch above junk status, underlining concerns about its financial health. As a result, the company is likely to shrink new mortgage-lending activity and focus on growing its retail deposit base.
A waiver of competition law in the banking sector was viewed by analysts as a sign of desperation in Downing Street to avoid a run on B&B like that which triggered the near-collapse of Northern Rock last year.

However, The Times said there was no firm interest so far, despite the overtures of the City watchdog.
He warned that uncertainty could even lead to B&B customers taking their money out of the bank.
"The absence of any such bidders so far adds to the uncertainty about B&B's future, in our view," Mr Chen added
"Our concern is that significant retail deposit outflows may occur, forcing B&B to rely even more heavily on expensive wholesale funding."
This included a sharp rise in credit impairment charges for the six months to £74.6m, up from £5.3m in the same period last year.

Chief executive Richard Pym said: "The changes we have announced today focus the business as a strong savings bank, reduce the size of our lending activities, and increase our capacity in arrears collection.
"We are a strongly capitalised bank now undertaking a complex transition with regrettable job losses, but we are planning to put the problems of the past behind us and have a business which is fit for purpose going forward."

B&B nationalisation 'last resort'

Une fusion avec Northern Rock évoquéeThe BBC's business editor Robert Peston said the Treasury, the Financial Services Authority and Bradford and Bingley were working to find a solution over the weekend, to announce before markets opened on Monday morning.
Full nationalisation, which could well include merging B&B with Northern Rock, was very much a last option - not impossible, but the final resort if all else fails, he said.

Circulez, y a rien à voir. Au moins les actionnaires paient ici le juste prix, ils sont rincés.Former shareholders of Bradford & Bingley should not get any compensation after the troubled business was split and sold, an independent valuer said.
The bank was split into "good" and "bad" parts in the aftermath of the banking crisis, with the better half sold to Santander.
Now independent valuer Peter Clokey has recommended that the Treasury offer no compensation to shareholders.
The decision would affect 935,000 investors.
B&B's shares closed at 20p in the final day of trading before the nationalisation and break-up of the group.
Mr Clokey said that, without nationalisation, the bank would have fallen into administration, leaving nothing for shareholders.
